How Can You Decide What Screws to Use for a Wood Fence?
While nails are faster for pickets, screws are the superior choice for attaching rails to posts. Using the wrong screw can lead to rust, wood rot, or the structural collapse of your fence line over time.

Coating and Threading
Never use standard interior "drywall" screws for a fence. You need Exterior Grade Deck Screws with a ceramic coating or Stainless Steel screws. For the high humidity of Montgomery County, we recommend 3-inch #9 or #10 screws for rails. These provide enough "bite" into the post to withstand the weight of a water-logged fence panel during the rainy season.
